Somewhere between 250,000 and 500,000 people filled the streets of midtown Manhattan on the Sunday before the Republican convention opened. The tone was much more anti-Bush than pro-Kerry - there were some Kerry signs around, but the W-hating stuff greatly outnumbered them. The city refused to allow the march to end with a rally in Central Park - an outrage against free speech, but it would have been a tedious anticlimax to an exuberant (if hot) afternoon to have to listen to hours of speeches.
Here are some pictures taken by friend of LBO, Michael Di Paola.

The Fox News billboard was roundly jeered. The smoke is rising from the burning green dragon; for more, see Liza Featherstone's report here.
There were a few counter-protesters, most of them looking quite marginal, and wearing their hostility on their chests.
